About Our Village
Hutton Cranswick is a working community comprising the villages of Hutton and Cranswick. Situated approximately 3 miles south of Driffield and 8.6 miles north of Beverley on the A164 road in East Yorkshire. The village has a good selection of shops. These include well stocked shop (Spar), a butcher, a Chinese/fish and chip shop, a post office counter (in Spar Shop), a farm shop, a garden centre, a beauty salon, and a public house with accommodation.
It is mainly a working village with a small but growing retirement community. Originally comprising two villages, Hutton to the north and Cranswick to the south, they merged to form Hutton Cranswick. The village has a history traceable to the Domesday Book, some of which was recorded in 1980 by Herbert Johnson in his book A tale of Two Villages - The last twenty years and was updated by a resident author in 2000 and was reprinted by the Bulletin Committee as a millennium project.
Hutton Cranswick’s main claim to fame is its village green, which is said to be the largest in the East Riding. Running to some six and a half acres, it provides a pleasant visitor attraction with mature and impressive horse chestnut trees, a children’s play area, and the village pond.
The village produces a monthly informative A5 booklet The Bulletin which provides advertising for local businesses, comments on local affairs and the opportunity to advise residents of forthcoming events and the success or otherwise of past activities.
There is a thriving industrial estate with a good mix of Industries providing varied employment opportunities including two PLC's, three garages, caravan storage and various small businesses in workshop units.
There is a purpose-built sports and recreation centre providing facilities for football and cricket teams from around the area, archery, tennis on floodlit courts and a fully stocked fishing lake. Allotments are also available to rent.
Nearby are two of East Yorkshire’s finest country houses. Burton Agnes is a magnificent Elizabethan house filled with treasures, and in the lovely village of Sledmere is Sledmere House, home of the Sykes family, who have played a major part in maintaining and restoring churches and villages throughout East Riding. The house has many interesting features, especially the Turkish Room, the 100ft long library and the Capability Brown gardens. Deer roam in the grounds, a lovely place to take a picnic.
